What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a three dimensional deformity of the spine. Visually there can be a side shift of the spine, with or without a protrusion of the ribs, one side of the pelvis could me more prominent, one shoulder can be lower and forwards. These are adaptations of the spine to balance its statics.

What are my treatment options?

Depending on the degrees of the scoliosis and the severity of your symptoms you would be advised for conservative or surgical management. The conservative management based on Schroth treatment is based on specific exercises that could help you improve your pain, symmetry and curvatures. It could also decelerate the progression of your scoliosis.

How can the Schroth treatment help me?

The exercises aim to elongate the spine and exercise your body towards the opposite direction of your scoliosis. They also combine breathing techniques that expand the shortened concave areas and force the ribs to de-rotate the scoliotic spine. Daily practice of these exercises can improve your body awareness and help you adopt a new conscious posture, which promotes health and symmetry. For better results the exercises are combined with manual therapy-hands on techniques.  Our treatment will also show you different ways of exercising your body with other types of exercises, such as Pilates and weight training in a gym environment, making you aware of how to further progress with your posture strengthening training.
