Acupuncture as a treatment method is a few thousand years old and originally started from China. It is part of the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
The acupuncture according to TCM is based on meridians, imaginary channels where the energy constantly flows in our bodies. The energy is of opposing forces, the yin and the yang, and all manifestation of disease is a disruption of this fine balance of energies. In recent decades research has shown acupuncture’s efficacy in treating musculoskeletal injuries and pain.
We don’t always know how it works but there is a common consensus that it can block painful stimuli reaching the brain, improve blood supply and stimulate natural healing responses in our bodies.
In Physiomove we specialise in the treatment of acupuncture either traditional or western, called dry needling and we routinely combine it with manual therapy and rehabilitation exercises to achieve a faster and better result. The dry needling or western acupuncture focuses on dealing with trigger points. These are local muscle spasms or points of tension that can be very sensitive, painful and can refer pain to different areas of the body. By needling the trigger points we achieve reduction of the spasm and the symptoms related to muscle tension. If you would like to try acupuncture, TCM or dry needling, then we will go through a short list of questions/ precautions and it can be part of your physiotherapy treatment.
