There can be an intra articular/internal derangement or extra articular cause. Often bruxism and teeth grinding can lead to increased tension in the masticatory muscles causing pain and alterations of jaw movement. TMJ dysfunctions are often associated with clicking of the jaw, restricted mouth opening and problems with occlusion. They can affect eating habits, speech and cause headaches.
Physiotherapy in the form of manual therapy, acupuncture and exercise rehabilitation can help in improving the jaw movement and establish normal and symmetrical mouth opening.
